Quite a few of my clients have come to me to have their books formatted, and then found themselves unable to update their already published works with their latest releases because they don’t have the formatted Word manuscripts on file. That’s fine if the formatter who worked on your previous books is available to do the updates. Hopefully the formatter is still in business and findable, or even alive. Things happen. If you have the formatted manuscripts, either your current formatter, or yourself, can do the updates in minutes and have the incarnations required by the various publishing platforms quickly. If you don’t then you either leave them as they are minus any future updates or have whatever manuscripts that you do have on file reformatted, which is a waste of money.

You put lots of thought into your book. You consider the content you write and the eye catching cover of your book. What about the typesetting/formatting for your book? Do you think it is important?

Well, it really is!

Typesetting greatly affects the readability of your book. You are probably aware that grammar and spelling errors can distract the reader from the ideas you are trying to convey. Typesetting has a similar effect. The correct typeset will make it easier for the reader to comprehend the text. The wrong typeset will have the reader struggling to make sense of the text.

Readers don’t read individual letters. They read words. More familiar words are more easily recognized and read than unfamiliar ones. Typos, grammar and such are an amazingly common complaint in reviews, something which many indy authors encounter at some point. However, there’s another issue that can get you a bad rapp (or rep, as the case may be) that you may not even be aware of–formatting.

The guidelines for a printed book with an interior that looks professionally done are substantially different than those for an ebook. Considering how there’s a good chance most of your readers are going to opt for the electronic version, it’s in your best interest to make sure that it looks professional as well, not like an afterthought.

How to Use Word like Scrivener

I have Scrivener. I love Scrivener for writing my first draft. But invariably, I move into Word once I begin editing. Maybe because it’s more familiar to me, or because I like having a fully functioning dictionary. But it doesn’t matter. Today, I want to show you how to use Word as if it were Scrivener, from the very beginning. (All Scrivener screenshots are from Simply Scrivener and images link to their appropriate tutorials.)

A few disclaimers:

  • This only works in Word 2007 or later, as far as I’m aware.
  • If you thrive on the index cards, mind mapping, color labels, and heaps of character information, your go-to program will be OneNote rather than Word.

As promised this post is to help those, who like myself, became a bit lost in how to format your word doc files for kindle. This post contains lots of images so that you can ‘see’ which tools to use on your computer to make formatting your document easy and stress-free. I work on a mac but am using ‘word for mac’ so I know that the function keys won’t be much different across the board.

Dependent on what electronic device your reader will use, the e-version of your novel will be structurally different from your paper back.
