The Two Telltale Signs of a Narcissist

A Blog About Healing From PTSD

As clinical psychologist Dr. Joseph Burgo states in his book The Narcissist You Know:

“Although the APA sets forth nine potential criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder…. those nine actually boil down to two: an inflated sense of self-importance and a lack of empathy for other people; the remaining features are by-products that naturally follow from them.”

1) an inflated sense of self-importance

2) a lack of empathy for other people

Bingo! There it is, in a nutshell.

  1. This is great. People can have narcissistic traits and still lack the full complement of criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Nevertheless they can wreak havoc in other people’s lives and cause untold damage, in the absence of “full blown” NPD. I think the criteria for NPD should be simplified, anyway. The nine contain overlapping and, to me, confusing criteria. Dr. Burgo really nails this!

    1. I agree Laura. An inflated sense of self and a lack of empathy are enough to wreak havoc in other people’s lives and cause a great deal of damage without being a malignant narcissist.

      1. That’s pretty malignant already, without the other ones!

  2. Nice summation. 🙂

    1. Yep. That sums it up in a nutshell.
