Sample Chapters and Book Excerpts

Very often authors will use “sample chapter” and “excerpt” interchangeably. The two are very different. Below you will find the characteristics of each as well as ways to use both to market your books.

Sample chapters are selected chapters from a work of fiction or non-fiction used to give readers a taste of your work. Sometimes authors will give away a sample chapter to their followers to tease an upcoming release or to simply market a book’s release.

An excerpt can be as long as a couple of sentences or a passage from a chapter in a book. Excerpts are generally used in reviews, marketing materials, and as references. An entire chapter is not an excerpt.
